Couple. on here felt the exact same way at first. I promise I'll never leave you two hanging. You'll get jaw-dropping ethereal images all while having a freaking blast!

Hi, I'm LINDSEY.

Kristen and James celebrated their Fourth of July wedding at The Lake House Inn in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, proving that classic ceremony structure and adventurous portrait work aren’t mutually exclusive. They were completely down to lean into something a little different—and I was obsessed with them for it! Their willingness to trust the portrait process completely led to some of the most unique and nontraditional wedding pictures I’ve documented all year!

The Lake House Inn Wedding Venue Overview: Ceremony and Reception Spaces

The Lake House Inn is one of those scenic wedding venues near me that photographers dream about—not because it’s trendy, but because it’s one of the best wedding venues for creative portraits!

The outdoor ceremony site overlooks a private lake, framed by trees and open sky. The indoor pavilion has vaulted ceilings and enough windows to let evening light flood in without feeling like a moody lakefront lodge.

Kristen and James used the property exactly as it’s designed: a waterfront ceremony that felt intimate despite the guest count, followed by a reception that transitioned seamlessly from cocktails to dancing.

The white draping and cement floors in the ballroom give the indoor space a modern, elegant feel.

The way the light hits this space is absolutely magical!

Unique Wedding Photo Ideas That Required Zero Props

What made their day work so beautifully from a photography perspective was their willingness to use the full footprint of the venue. We didn’t just photograph them at the altar and call it done. We explored the secret nooks and crannies. I guided them towards the treeline and let the lake become a character in their story—not simply a backdrop.

Here’s what I love about nontraditional wedding photography: it doesn’t require gimmicks! Kristen and James didn’t bring vintage cars or coordinated poses they’d saved on Pinterest. What they brought was energy, trust, and a shared sense of “let’s see what happens.”

From someone who has photographed hundreds of couples throughout Philadelphia, Delaware, and New Jersey, I’m convinced those are the ingredients for the most breathtaking portraits.

Why Nontraditional Wedding Pictures Start with Trust

Some of the strongest images from their day came from suggestions that felt simple in the moment but required them to be fully present. Any time I suggested something slightly unexpected, they were immediately on board, and that openness made the portraits feel natural instead of forced.

Walking toward the camera instead of standing still. Acting like the venue was their home, and they were just playing in the backyard. Letting James lead Kristen towards the lake without choreography. Pausing mid-movement so I could capture the in-between. Pure magic!

These choices work when you’re willing to be directed without feeling stiff, and to move naturally without overthinking it. If you’re looking for unique wedding photography poses, the answer isn’t in the pose itself.

It’s in how comfortable you are letting go of what you think a wedding portrait should look like and trusting your photographer to capture all your best angles. When couples trust that process, the results are always stunning!

How to Plan Nontraditional Wedding Pictures at The Lake House Inn

One of the most common questions I hear from couples is: “How do we make time for creative portraits without making our guests wait?” The answer is simpler than most people think—lean on the expertise of your photographer and wedding planner.

We’ll help you build your timeline around when light is best and when it’s convenient!

For Kristen and James, that meant doing a first look when the light was high and direct, but still soft enough in the areas we chose to explore. When the sun dipped low, I stole them away from the reception for a few intimate moments to capture the magic of golden hour. Fabulous planning makes for fabulous photos!

Nontraditional Wedding Photography Tips

If you’re considering how to incorporate non-traditional portrait photography into your own day, start with these planning principles:

  • Do a first look. This will give you the freedom to enjoy cocktail hour with your guests rather than rushing into photos directly after the ceremony.
  • Prioritize light according to the season. The best portraits happen during golden hour, not during the 15-minute window between your ceremony and appetizers. Trust me on this one!
  • Communicate with your photographer early. If you want unique wedding photo ideas executed well, your timeline needs to reflect that intention.
  • Trust the process. The couples who get the most striking images are the ones who stop asking “Are we done yet?” and start trusting their photographer’s eye. It makes all the difference!

Why The Lake House Inn Works for Both Traditional and Nontraditional Couples

Not every venue supports the kind of portrait flexibility Kristen and James wanted. Some properties are beautiful but landlocked by strict timelines, limited acreage, or challenging light. The Lake House Inn wedding venue solves for all of that—and then some!

The property offers enough visual variety that you’re not scrambling for backdrop options. The outdoor ceremony site, lakefront, ballroom, and surrounding treeline all photograph differently, which means your gallery won’t feel repetitive even if you spend an hour on portraits. Obsessed!

For couples who want a traditional wedding structure but aren’t interested in traditional wedding photography, scenic wedding venues near me like The Lake House Inn offer the best of both worlds.

You can have the formal processional, the seated dinner, the choreographed first dance—and still walk away with a gallery that feels editorial, intentional, and wholly yours.

If you’re comparing luxury wedding venues in the Philadelphia metro area, consider how much physical space and lighting flexibility each location offers.

What Makes Nontraditional Wedding Pictures Feel Timeless

There’s a difference between trendy and timeless. Trendy portrait styles can date themselves within a few years—overly posed, overly edited, or so heavily styled that the couple becomes secondary to the aesthetic. Non-traditional portrait photography, done well, avoids that trap entirely.

Kristen and James’s portraits feel timeless because they’re grounded in movement, light, and emotion—not in what’s currently popular on Instagram. Because they trusted the process instead of micromanaging it, their expressions feel relaxed, not forced.

Finding The Best Pennsylvania Wedding Photographer to Capture Your Day

You don’t need elaborate props, trending poses, or a shot list longer than your vendor contract. You need a photographer who understands light and timing, and you need to build your day around protecting the moments that matter most!

I’m always slipping portraits into the quiet in-between moments—right after the ceremony, during transitions, or when the light is just too good to ignore. The balance of Type A preparation with relaxed execution is where the best images always come from!
