Located just off Rockland Road in Wilmington, Delaware, Nemours Estate is one of the most photographically versatile engagement session locations on the East Coast. The French Neoclassical mansion, its formal gardens, ornate fountains, and sweeping front lawns give couples an entire editorial spread’s worth of backdrops — all within a single afternoon. If you’ve been searching for ideas for engagement photos at a formal estate in the Philadelphia and Delaware region, this is your sign. Consider this your virtual Nemours Estate tour through the lens of my recent summer session with Kaylee and Jowan!
This post walks through every location we hit during their session, posing ideas with examples, and how you can prep for your own engagement photos at Nemours Estate Mansion in Wilmington, DE.

Why Nemours Estate Mansion Is One of the Best Places For Engagement Photos
Most engagement session locations give you one or two backdrops and call it a day. Nemours Estate gives you dozens — each distinct enough that your gallery looks like it was shot on a European vacation, not an afternoon in Delaware.
The formal gardens, the grand allée, the ornate fountains, the balustrade terraces, and the mansion facade itself are all within walking distance of each other. That means we can move through the entire property in a single session and come out the other side with a gallery that has endless variety: wide architectural shots, intimate garden moments, movement, stillness, color portraits, and black and whites.

For couples who want their engagement photos outside in a formal botanical garden setting, this Nemours Estate tour will show you how perfect a choice it is!
For the full breakdown of the estate’s history, named garden features, and best seasons to visit, my complete Nemours Estate engagement guide covers all of it.

Nemours Estate Tour Of The Best Engagement Photo Locations
Location 1: The Central Fountain
There are several fountains on the Nemours Estate grounds, but the central fountain in the parterre garden is in a category of its own. The main basin is topped with a gilded baroque statue and ringed by smaller cherub spouts at water level. In the right light, that gold catches like fire against the greenery behind it. I’ll never skip this spot during a Nemours Estate engagement session!

Jowan twirled Kaylee in circles while I stepped back to capture a wide shot with the fountain spray cascading dramatically all around. It looked like they were off in their own little world.
Location 2: The Mansion Entrance Steps
The second stop on our Nemours Estate tour features the front entrance of the mansion. With its wide stone steps, sphinx-carved urns, and imposing architectural detail, it is perfect for poses that take advantage of the setting.
I had Kaylee and Jowan sit on the steps, lean into each other, and simply be. The architecture and surroundings do all the work — all these two had to do was be themselves. These ended up being some of the most relaxed images from the whole session, which is usually what happens when you strip the pressure away and just find a spot to sit.

This is also a great place for us to snag some snazzy ring detail shots in the shaded, even lighting.

Location 3: The Mansion Facade and Front Lawn
The mansion facade gives you something many other garden venues don’t: true architectural scale. The symmetry of the columns, the manicured lawn stretching out front, and the gravel path running straight to the entrance create a natural frame that makes couples look like they belong in a period drama. I’m envisioning a perfectly over-the-top, gossip-filled Bridgerton tea party in this very spot.

For this session, Kaylee and Jowan naturally gravitated to some classic poses: walking towards the camera, walking away from the camera, standing hand in hand, and going in for a kiss.
We also experimented with some movement shots, which usually end up being a personal fav. Twirling in circles, running across the lawn to catch some motion blur shots, and dancing like no one was watching (because they weren’t— we had the whole place to ourselves!).

Location 4: The Boxwood Garden
Oooof. If I had to pick a favorite spot on Nemours Estate’s property (please, don’t make me), this might be it?? Not only do you get the impeccable landscaping and seasonal blooms providing pops of color all around you, but you also get this insane architectural backdrop behind you, which creates the most interesting and layered shots in the whole gallery.

In summer, the plantings between the hedges go full maximalist: white impatiens, purple salvia, lavender, and pink flowers filling every gap in the pattern. Against Kaylee’s white dress and Jowan’s navy suit, it was a color story that practically styled itself.
Walking, running, dancing, and carrying each other down these garden pathways is all fair game when it comes to engagement photography posing. You don’t need to try hard to look like a million bucks out here—no Nemours Estate tour would be complete without this spot!

Blue and White Engagement Photo Outfit Ideas
Unsurprisingly, I’ve previously photographed several other blue and white themed engagement sessions at Nemours Estate. This classic color combo just works so well with this timeless French estate. Olivia and Michael’s session leaned more casual fun with blue and white floral print, while Kaylee and Jowan showed up dressed to the nines—Jowan in a dapper deep blue suit and Kaylee in this gorgeous white midi dress that fit like it was made for her!
