Best Modern Photography Trends to Try During Your Engagement Session

Search

I'll be your wedding day fairy godmother/hype woman. Wanna know a little secret? That little nervous feeling you have about being awkward on camera? Every. Single. Couple. on here felt the exact same way at first. I promise I'll never leave you two hanging. You'll get jaw-dropping ethereal images all while having a freaking blast!

Hi, I'm LINDSEY.

Your engagement session is more than just a time to get cute photos for your save-the-dates—it’s the perfect opportunity to experiment with photography styles and techniques you might want to incorporate or recreate on your wedding day! I get it, some trends (like flash photography) can feel a little intimidating if you’ve never tried them before, but that’s exactly why an engagement session is the perfect testing ground. Plus, if you’re going to celebrate this major life milestone, why not go all out? Here are some of my favorite engagement photography trends to try during your session!

Direct Flash Photography

This photography trend is having a major moment right now, and for good reason. It’s giving major celebrity couple being chased by paparazzi vibes without feeling too “out there.” It’s got that classic, cinematic feel that makes every shot look like it belongs in a magazine. If you want your engagement photos to feel bold, modern, and effortlessly cool, this is the way to go. And don’t worry—I know how to use flash to flatter you, not wash you out (or blind you, lol)!

Motion Blur Photography

If you love photos that feel dynamic and full of life, motion blur is a trend worth trying. It’s perfect for creating that sense of movement—whether it’s twirling in your partner’s arms, strolling hand in hand, or just leaning into the moment. And I promise I won’t go overboard! The goal is to enhance your photos with intentional artistic flair.

Recreate a Meaningful Family Photo (or a Famous Painting!)

One of my favorite engagement sessions ever featured Annelise and Jon, who recreated an old engagement photo of Annelise’s parents. (You can see their sweet throwback-inspired photos in Valley Forge here). It was such a thoughtful way to connect their love story with their family’s history. Whether you want to replicate an iconic family photo or take inspiration from a classic painting, this is such a fun and personal way to make your engagement session extra special.

Dress to the Nines (But Make It Comfy)

Listen, you do you, always. That said, I am fully invested in you looking your best during your engagement session! I’m also very on board with the engagement photo trend of dressing up for your photoshoot. Think cocktail attire, elegant day or evening wear, or even something fashion-forward that makes you feel like the main character. But—and this is a big but—your shoes have to be comfortable. There’s nothing worse than looking incredible but secretly suffering in painful heels or stiff dress shoes.

Accessorize for Extra Personalization

Accessories can take your engagement photos to the next level. Hats, scarves, watches, pocket squares—these little details add personality and polish without requiring a full outfit change. Plus, they give us extra props to play with during the session. I always tell couples: accessories are your best friend when it comes to making your photos feel uniquely you.

Unique & Modern Posing: Beyond the Basics

Gone are the days of stiff, awkwardly posed engagement photos. Instead, we’re embracing more natural, editorial, and modern posing. Think relaxed, candid, and effortlessly stylish—leaning into each other, laughing mid-conversation, or even doing something playful like running hand-in-hand. My goal is to make you feel comfortable and confident while capturing the real connection between you and your partner.
